Calving the Cow And Care of the Calf, 4th Edition
by Eddie Straiton , John Cherrington
March 1994
is the fourth edition of a manual previously called “TV Vet Book for Stock Farmers”. First published in 1965, it has been completely updated, reorganized and revised. It shows how to deal with calving and calf health and husbandry from the author’s own wide veterinary experience.
Eddie Straiton, known as the TV Vet, has always specialised in obstetrics. in fact, he maintains that his work on obstetrics has been largely resposible for any succes he has attained as a practising veterinary surgeon. His interest in calving cows took root soon after he qualified as a veterinary surgeon in Glasgow in 1940 and went into practice in Staffordshire. Appaled at the damage done bij existing ‘brute force’ calving methods, he pioneered caesarean section in 1945– a technique now practised throughout the world And he followed this up by a study of natural bovine birth– about which little or no information existed– on a farm with a dairy herd which he bought for the purpose. the results of this study, with its emphasis on calving being allowed to take its natural course, and the techniques evolved from it, form the basis of this book. As the TV Vet, Eddie Straiton became well-known to farmes all over the United Kingdom through his feature articles in the national farming press and through his popular veterinary contributions to the BBC’s farming programme. He completed thirty years in sound and television broadcasting and still retains the senior partnership in a large mixed practice in the midlands.
